MOTOR1: Watch McLaren 720S Crush Its Opponents In Rolling Races

August 7th, 2018 by

A 740-hp Porsche 991 Turbo S is no match for the British Supercar.

We can’t imagine a better way to spend $300,000 than buy a new McLaren 720S. When it was released, the British supercar was described by many as just an upgraded 650S. But it’s actually a very different and much faster vehicle.

Acceleration and speed are probably best measured with direct drag races against other supercars and sports cars. That’s the case in the video at the top, where the 720S meets a couple of performance stock and upgraded vehicles in drag battles with rolling starts.

The rules in this genre are a bit different than in classic drag races. The competing cars have to be within one to five miles per hour (2-8 kilometers per hour) of each other as they cross the line. The winner is the first to cross the finish line and the highest speed of the day or event gets a trophy, too.

In this video, the 720S meets cars such as a tuned 740-horsepower (552-kilowatt) Porsche 991 Turbo S, 700-hp (522-kW) McLaren 570GT, 740-hp (552-kW) 9ff Porsche 911 Turbo Convertible, and an Audi RS6 Avant. We don’t know whether the 720S is in factory form, but most likely it is, which makes its achievement even more impressive.

The British supercar is beating its every opponent on the drag strip with a rolling start of approximately 31 mph (50 kph). During its best run against a Mercedes-AMG GT, the 720S registers an impressive top speed of 178.64 mph (287.49 kph) with a rolling start of 32 mph (52 kph).

We’ve seen the 720S participating in a number of other drag races, including a battle against a tuned Nissan GT-R, which, actually, was one of the few vehicles so far to beat the McLaren. However, the car is much faster than a Lamborghini Huracan and, unsurprisingly, than a stock Audi RS3 Sedan.
